Hi, I’m Baz - 🧔🏼♂️
I’m not a Zen monk, but I have monkish habits that make my life as a creator a more calm and focused experience.
How did I do this?
I adopted the monastic practices of mindfulness, meditation, simplicity, and a few others, making them part of my daily life.
My core practices include meditation, simplicity, and compassionate kindness. I’m also trained to teach and coach others in meditation.
ZENish is my Substack for creators who also want…
To eliminate drama and angst… for good.
To achieve a continual level of contentment…even when circumstances become difficult.
A simpler lifestyle with less physical stuff and mental clutter
To incorporate a spiritual component into their life, even after leaving their ancestral faith tradition.
To stop playing whack-a-mole with overthinking, doom scrolling, racing thoughts at night, and more.
Who am I?
My real name is Barry, but my friends have called me Baz for over 50 years. I also have two Buddhist names: Ji’gme (from the Tibetan tradition, meaning “fearless”) and Doku’zan (from the Zen tradition, meaning “solitary, independent mountain”). You can read about them here.
I practice a mix of Theravada and Soto Zen Buddhism; hence, I am ZENish. That means that while I love the Zen practices of bowing, chanting, and many of the ceremonies… I also view them like nuts and sprinkles on an ice cream sundae - tasty but not essential for my awakening. I also incorporate the Theravada practice of loving kindness into my daily meditation.
I was trained in meditation coaching and instruction by Adreanna Limbach and Lodro Rinzler, who jointly write ‘The Laundry,’ also here on Substack.
My best friend is a chocolate brown Labradoodle. 🐾🐕🦺
